Was pleasantly surprised today to receive a message from Jay of RedRoadDesign on Etsy that my 'Snow bound' collection has made it to the Etsy UK front page. Many items are by fellow members of Jewelry on Etsy and McEtsy teams so this collection getting featured is trully something special.

First walk up Goatfell in 2012

It's been somewhat stormy lately, but the weather finally decided to have a sunny-and-not-too-windy break, so ... I went up Goatfell :D

Some of the storm damage. Quite a few trees & branches fell off in recent storms. Brodick Castle has closed its park due to storm damage & put up DANGER signs and red tape across some paths. National Trust has cleared the larger damage from the paths.

Part sun, part cloud, part rain weather. It was raining when I took this photo, but the break in the clouds can be seen coming over the ridges. & the start of a rainbow ...

The rainbow was magnificent! Made Goatfell look like a hill.

Almost at the top & the path is blocked by the snow. Mushy, slushy, quite compact, plenty skidding, over foot deep snow over a rocky path, so ... went straight up, cutting across heather, grass & rocks to get to ...

... the top of Goatfell. Great view, freezing wind, lots of sunshine :D

I've been going somewhat crazy over Turquoise lately & these earrings are the latest creations. Like a lot of the pieces I love creating, they are outwardly simple, yet they have unmistakable original, organic & handcrafted details. I'm sure they would lend themselves to be one of the most often used pieces.

Each ear hook is individually handcrafted from sterling silver wire: melted, forged, bended, twisted, hammered, oxidized, filed, until it looks like a cross between a petal & marquise shape - one of my favourite shapes for the ear wires. They are not too long & not too short & look great with shorter & longer hair with the overall drop being just over 4cm.

Turquoise beads are a gem of a find - they're a luscious 12 to 13mm in diameter, which is perfect to create an impact with their gorgeous earthy organic matrix & cerulean-Robbin's egg-sky-with a tinge of lagoon blue colour. Yet, being natural Turquoise, which is chalky & as such fairly light stone, they are light enough to wear all day long. Samples from The All Natural Face - affordable & a great way to find the colours you like

Ok, so I do LOVE playing make-up, but until I found mineral make-up last year I have almost given up using it altogether as it kept on irritating my skin & my eyes.

The foundation that always feels too thick, or too drying or covers but in blotches & no matter how much you scrub your face it ends up all wrong. Or when you've been at the computer for a hole day starring at the screen & end up rubbing your eyes & the mascara & the eyeshadow get in and sting so bad you have to run into the bathroom to wash them off. All that is not fun!

But fun is exactly what I think make up should be. Maybe that's just a little girl in me that used to love playing with her mother's lipsticks & mascaras. Or the teenager that wants to look pretty & is ready to experiment with orange eyeshadow & blue mascara. Or the grown woman that has finally found what suits her, but from time to time would still love to try something different.

And while mineral make up might not glue itself to my face as the conventional one does, nor stay for 24h and then to be scratched off with more chemicals, these days I wouldn't use any other, even if it does mean re-applying it from time to time. All you need to do to take it off is simply washing it off with water & gently pat your face dry with a towel, or, if you're as lazy as me, simply fall asleep still wearing it for that slightly sultry&messy bed eyes look in the morning ;D

So this is why I'd like to let you know about the mineral make up & the great sellers I have come across that are making, wearing & selling it directly.

Thought we've had the last of the snow this winter, but, no, some fell last night & this morning mountains looked gorgeous. So, of course I went for a walk :)
Would have loved to get all the way to the saddle, but as it happened my wellies weren't that comfortable for a 3h walk, still I'm happy I wore them as the snow on the ground was melting fast by midday.

Ok, sometimes I'm too lazy, or simply don't have enough time to search in order to find new items for my next treasury. But I love making treasuries. So, often I go to the shops of the Jet & McEtsy teams I'm in & pick something I like there or something that fits the theme. Recently, for the first time in about half a year, I began using Pounce feature on Etsy again in order to find items for my treasuries. It has a choice of Undiscovered/Just Sold. This treasury was made with some items using this feature & featuring sellers who haven't yet had any sales on Etsy and/or have recently joined. Plus, some new items from my 'old' favourites. & While I like finding new items & sellers and making a treasury with lots of 'fresh' talent, it got me thinking - what about those that only had a sale or two? Their shops would not show up in Pounce & it would be much harder to find them on Etsy if not searching the particular thing they're making/selling. More often than not, it's hard for people to start an online shop & get some exposure for it & get it 'off the ground' - I would not say that my own shop is 'off the ground' yet! & this is something that Etsy is failing at - giving equal & regular exposure and promotion to all its sellers. They seem to strive for a certain aesthetic, a brand, but for a site that is supposedly promotes handmade it fails to realise that handmade is not just one aesthetic, it's not just one fashion, one trend - it's a community (however un-uniformed) & in a community every member has to have a voice & some attention. Not least because each seller tries to promote their Etsy shop wherever they can & by extent Etsy itself, so it doesn't seem that much to ask that Etsy promotes its sellers in return. Does it?

The last bit of stretching across stones was the most difficult one, and that's where a lot of folk took regular breaks. As you can see this walk is somewhat popular - even with a few people around, it felt like a traffic jam!

Feeling Seaside

It seems that I cannot not be inspired by the seaside. I love taking a stroll on a beach, finding starfish, interesting pebbles, waves and sand shaped pieces of glass ... watching tiny crabs hurrying sideways away from the view, mussels emerging as the tide comes in ... boats sailing, seals basking on the rocks ... and the colours of the sky and the sea merging at the horizon and the line of the distant mainland fading under the hazy light or the mist ...
These two treasuries have been inspired by the misty days we've recently has, when the light was soft, hazy, merging outlines and veiling over the islands.

A lot of my inspiration comes from the surroundings. As it happens, it has been raining on the West Coast of Scotland for a VERY long time now, so long that I cannot remember when we've had the last sunny day. Yep, it's that bad. It's even worse as I love my walks & in this weather no amount of waterproofs will keep you dry for any length of time. Just as well we're beside the sea and on a hill - the water just gushes down gardens, gutters, pavements, roads and into the sea. All this rain also provides an immense amount of inspiration. Ok, not together ... & maybe not where you are, but I'm in Scotland & the time is right for both. So, if you feel adventurous you can try living off the land. While I'm feeling ok with picking blackberries, I'm not too sure with mushrooms. I'm no expert with mushrooms, my mother was. I like spotting them and then checking whether they're poisnos or not in a book. So, here are a few picks for you to see whether you can spot which ones are edible and which ones should not even be touched.

Influences - GOTHIC

I tried to define just how far back this influence stretches - Beetle Juice, The Seventh Seal, Great Expectations, Caspar David Friedrich, Jane Eyre, Shelley, Beethoven, Medieval architecture ... I don't think there ever was a stretch of time when some form of Gothic influence, or what could be described as a Gothic attribute, was not present in my life. Books, films, architecture, oral history & everyday explanations of everyday events that often were in the mind of the narrator perceived as having elements of extraordinary, mysterious, dark. The human mind seems always to be fascinated with something it cannot explain in rational terms, searching for mystery. What attracts me to Gothic in visual terms is the richness of form and colours, the deep hues, the form that is shown in shadows and light. It's the attention it demands - you have to see it up close, trace every detail, notice the little things. It's the emotions that can only be expressed by strong, deep colours - no surprise then that Gothic inspired pieces are made with oxidized black silver and with accents of deep red & blue colours. Gothic is one of the strongest influences in my work & it has a special place in my heart. Hope you like the result.

Bridal range

There always have been bridal-inspired items in my range, and there always has been the intention to develop a fuller, more specific bridal collection. It's been taking me a long time, but I do hope that you like the new items.

Fist in line are hair accessories & I just listed the Classic Poppy design. They are eco-friendly, being made with re-used material from a previously made/owned/worn/cleaned garment. The fabric has a luxurious silky feel and brilliant white colour. Each petal is individually cut and singed. Flowers are adorned with natural freshwater pearls and Moonstone, or with Swarovski crystals that are available in different colours to suit the colours of your wedding/dress.

These flowers are designed to be versatile - they are not attached to pins, rather, I used fine silver headpins to hold the petals together and create a loop at the back so that they can easily be slided on and off your own pins.

Since I do not buy a length of new material that can be re-ordered, but rather choose great quality vintage garments to make these accessories from, the number of flowers that can be made is limited. Each flower is also completely unique as each is individually made by hand.

Crazy About Amber

After a recent sailing trip to the Baltic I have gone completely crazy for Amber! I love it - it's light, natural & the colours are great any time of the year. Brilliant yellow for Spring, any will be great for Summer & Autumn, and then for winter I like the lightest, almost clear colour for the day & the deepest, darkest Amber for the cosy evenings.
Pressed Amber also comes in so many wonderful shapes that I'm spoilt for choice & design possibilities. However, I do have a few ideas & I think that oxidized silver will look great with single Amber bead pendants. Light, medium or dark, short or long, round, briolette, square, oval or nugget - I will be spoiling you with all the delicious, tempting choices!

I know someone who loves to play with shapes and metals just as much as I do, maybe just a tad more. Her name is Jean, and what she creates can only be described as - stunning! I wish I could make something like what she makes, but I have no idea how she does it, to me it's magic, like something created in a deep dungeon by a wizard with a blacksmith's tools. Lady's Head

If you ever wondered just what sort of things you might find on the beach, this one is probably way down the list - a decapitated lady's head. Not a real head, that would be way too disturbing & I probably wouldn't be able to take a photo of it for you, never mind keeping the actual thing. I'm talking about a porcelain one. Chopped off by the pirates, nibbled by sharks, caressed by the sea until washing up with seaweed and pebbles on the shores of an island - this lady didn't seem to have much luck! But, with any luck, it will soon be converted into a pendant - a true and crazy one of a kind kinda thing that no one else is bound to have. And, considering the weather the previous day, there was a lot of promise for a stunning sunrise and not too much rain this morning, and that is exactly what happened.

Here's what I got up at 5am for:

It was mainly to take some photos of the stunning tulips (and yes, it was raining a bit this morning and the light is that of the sunrise), the boats and the rainbow were something of a bonus!
